Tolstoy was able to depict in detail the life of people against the backdrop of a political struggle, namely the war with the French. The name itself speaks for itself, and, based on this, all the heroes are also selected into two groups: people of war and people of the world. It should be clarified that representatives of a peaceful direction can also fight, while the leaders of the “war” are not always associated with military operations. This distinction rather lies at the heart of their moral principles.
People of war include people such as the Kuraginykh family, the Drubetskoy family, the whole circle of Alexander the First, and, of course, Napoleon, who became literally a symbol of the bloody massacre that swept Europe. These are people who are used to the atmosphere of permissiveness, a state where they themselves direct everything, trying to manipulate and play on the feelings of others. This group sometimes lacks compassion and pity, because they only think about themselves and their goals. They don’t care how to achieve this goal and what they have to do for this, because by entering into a deal with their conscience, they can justify themselves. It is they who instill hatred in the hearts of people, which subsequently leads to separation and war.
The people of the world include the family of Bolkonsky, Rostov, Bezukhov, ordinary people, as well as Kutuzov, who also became a symbol of war, a man who fights for peace. This group is characterized by respect and concern for others, they cannot understand the struggle, because the environment where people are doomed to suffering is alien to them. They belong to the environment of defenders who stand up to victory for the country and justice. These are heroes who can instill love, those who advocate the unity and prosperity of the people, family and other social institutions.
In the work, Tolstoy was able to visually reflect two opposing groups holding different views. And in the real world, such contrasting sides exist, and will exist, because the main battle still lasts, the confrontation between good and evil, peace and war.
