The Literaguru team has prepared for you the shortest retelling of Chekhov's famous short story “The Order”. This short work raises the most important topics that are relevant at all times.
Retelling (144 words): On the eve of the evening, the teacher Pustyakov turned to the lieutenant with a strange request: he needed to borrow the Order of Stanislav from him. He modestly and strainedly asked him for a reward to please the merchant and his charming daughters, whom he was going to visit. The lieutenant swore, but gave the order.
Arriving at the appointed time, the hero discovered that he was still late: everyone sat down at the table. He, too, hastened to take a seat, but then found that his colleague was also here and was looking at him with a strange look. Pustyakov was frightened by uncomfortable questions and the fact that his fraud would be revealed. He did not eat a single dish, as he was afraid to show his colleague his reward. Being hungry, he endured everything and sat, considering the evening unsuccessful, until he noticed the same order on the chest of his acquaintance, but a degree higher. Then both guests cheered up and began playfully discussing their awards.
Now Pustyakov regretted only that he had not requested a more reward.
Review (134 words): My opinion about the story is positive, because in it I saw a condemnation of ambition and vanity. These are important vices that haunt many people. The author quite rightly ridiculed them, considering such sins below human dignity.
I especially liked the way he describes the change in the state of the hero. At first he was ashamed to ask the lieutenant for the order, he understood that this was not good. Then he was embarrassed in the presence of a colleague, afraid of publicity. But when he realized that he was not the only one to deceive for the sake of gaining respect, his pangs of conscience weakened and gave way to complacency from a successful decision. He really felt that he was better when an order sparkled on his chest. The author debunked this illusion with a speaking surname - Pustyakov.
Thus, I would recommend this work to all those who would like to avoid such mistakes and strive to gain a normal self-esteem, which does not need to be stimulated by extraneous objects.
