At the theater - the premiere, in the main role - the mediocre actor Monfleury. But the poet and master, the Gascon Cyrano de Bergerac, forbade this "the most empty of jesters" to appear on the stage, and as soon as Cyrano's menacing voice is heard in the hall, the actor cowardly escapes from the stage. In compensation for damage to the disrupted performance Cyrano generously gives his last money to the director of the theater. Wanting to teach Cyrano a lesson, several dandy dandies begin to make fun of Cyrano. The object of ridicule is the gascon nose - not sparkling with beauty, Cyrano is the owner of a huge nose. But Cyrano responds to their miserable witticisms with a brilliant monologue about noses, then gives one impudent slap in the face and challenges another to a duel. As a true poet, he fights, while reciting a poem about his fight, and in front of admiring spectators he falls into the enemy “at the end of the premise”.
The audience is diverging. Cyrano is sad - he is in love with his cousin, the witty beauty Roxanne, but, knowing how ugly he is, Cyrano does not even think about reciprocity. Suddenly, the duo of Roxanne appears. She gives Cyrano the desire of her mistress to meet with him tomorrow. Crazy hope flares up in Cyrano’s heart. He makes a date at the patisserie of a fan of the muses of Ragno.
The ever-drunk poet Linier runs in and reports that “on the way to his house” a hundred hired killers lie in wait. Having exposed his sword, Cyrano goes to accompany him.
To Ragno, the confectioner who loves poets, comes Cyrano. Ragno asks him about yesterday’s battle: the whole of Paris only says that about the prowess of Cyrano, who fought with a whole gang of assassins and dispersed them. But Cyrano is not disposed to talk about himself: in anticipation of Roxanne, he writes her a letter - a declaration of love.
Roxanne comes. She tells her cousin that she fell in love with the handsome Christian de Neuville. Shocked Cyrano timidly tries to hint that her chosen one may turn out to be “stupider than a ram,” but Roxanne does not believe him. Christian was appointed to the regiment of the Gascon Guards, where Cyrano serves. “Yesterday I was terribly scared by stories about how brutal your Gascon squad is to newcomers ...” she says, and asks Cyrano to become the patron of Christian. Cyrano agrees.
Guards gather; they demand Cyrano’s account of yesterday’s battle. Cyrano begins, but some handsome novice constantly inserts the word "nose" into his story, which is forbidden to pronounce in the regiment. The guards, knowing Cyrano's quick-tempered temper, whisper: "He will chop it into pieces!"
Cyrano demands to leave them alone. When everyone comes out, he hugs the surprised Christian. Upon learning that Cyrano is Roxanne's cousin, Christian begs to forgive him for all his “noses” and admits that he loves his cousin. Cyrano reports that Christian’s feelings resonated in the girl’s heart and she expects a letter from him. Roxanne’s request frightens Christian: he’s one of those “whose speech they don’t know” in girls “to arouse love, to affect their dreams.” Cyrano invites Christian to become his mind and first gives him a letter written by him to Roxanne, but not yet signed, Christian agrees and puts his name. The guards who came in, expecting to see the stuffing from Christian, were incredibly surprised to find their opponents talking peacefully. Deciding that "the demon has become more peaceful than the lamb," one of them pronounces the word "nose" and immediately receives a slap from Cyrano.
By letters of Cyrano Christian conquers the love of Roxanne's capricious. She makes him a night date. Standing under the balcony, Christian babbles something obscurely, and Roxanne is ready to leave. Cyrano comes to the aid of the handsome lover. Hiding among the foliage, he whispers the ravishing words of love, loudly repeated by Christian. Spellbound by Cyrano's verses, Roxanne agrees to give her lover a kiss.
The love of Roxanne is also sought by the powerful Count de Guiche, commander of the regiment, where Cyrano and Christian serve. De Guiche sends a capuchin to Roxanne with a letter where he asks her for a meeting before leaving for war. Roxanne, reading the letter, changes its content and convinces the monk that he contains an order to marry her with Christian de Neuville. While the holy father performs the marriage ceremony, Cyrano, putting on a mask, pretends to be a madman to detain de Guiche. Finally, the procedure is completed, and the tired Cyrano discards an unnecessary mask. After making sure that he was deceived, the furious de Guiche orders Cyrano and Christian to immediately go to the barracks: at dawn, the regiment sets out on a campaign. “They are quite far away from wedding night! ..” he adds mockingly, looking at Christian, who has wrapped Roxana in his arms.
Advanced. The regiment of Gascon guards was surrounded on all sides by the enemy. The soldiers are starving. Cyrano is doing his best to maintain good spirits in them. He himself, unbeknownst to Christian, sneaks through enemy posts every morning to send another letter to Roxanne: Christian promised to write to her every day ...
Roxanne suddenly arrives at the camp; the words "I'm going to a friend's heart!" served as her password, and the enemy missed her carriage. Hugging the amazed Christian, Roxanne admits that his “wonderful letters” transformed her, and if at first “in her frivolity” she fell in love with her beauty, now she is “carried away” by “invisible beauty”: “I would have remained true to my love, by a wave of some sorceress’s rod, all your beauty has disappeared! .. ”Christian is terrified: Roxanne’s confession means that she loves not him, but Cyrano. Christian talks about everything Cyrano and is going to confess to Roxanne in his deception. Before Cyrano, the ghost of happiness flashes again. But the enemy bullet hits Christian, and he dies in the hands of Roxanne, not having time to tell her anything. On his chest, Roxanne finds a farewell letter written on behalf of Christian by desperate Cyrano. Mount Roxanne is endless, and the noble Cyrano decides to keep Christian secret. Ten years have passed. Roxanne lives in a monastery and mourns. Once a week, always at the same time, Cyrano visits her - informs her of the latest news. The poet is poor, he made many enemies, and then one day, "a terrible log suddenly fell from the window and his head broke there passing by chance Cyrano." Misfortune happens on the day when Cyrano usually visits Roxana.
Roxanne is surprised - Cyrano is late for the first time. Finally, the deadly de Bergerac appears. After listening to the playful reproaches of the cousin, he asks her to allow him to read Christian's farewell letter. Having forgotten, he begins to read it aloud. Roksana in amazement looks at Cyrano: it got completely dark on the street ... Then she finally understands what role Cyrano has voluntarily played for ten children ... "So why did you suddenly decide today to break the secret of your seal?" She asks in despair. Cyrano takes off his hat: his head is tied. “On Saturday, September the sixteenth day, the poet de Bergerac was killed by the villain’s hand,” he says in a mocking tone. "Oh my God! "I have loved one all my life, and this expensive creature is now secondarily I lose!" - wringing her hands, exclaims Roxanne. Cyrano, grabbing the sword, begins to strike at invisible enemies - lies, meanness, slander and dies with the sword in his hand.
