Several years have passed. There are no friends, women come and go. He remembers his Girlfriend and decides to find her. To do this, the hero again goes to the Dolphin Hotel. But there everything changed, as if by magic. In place of the old hotel stands an ultramodern hotel. When asked what happened to the previous owners, the administration responds evasively.
The hero has some relationship with a girl working at the hotel and through her he learns that there is a secret place where Something is hiding.
This Something turns out to be the Sheep Man - an episodic character of the previous book. He, in fact, has nothing to do with the Sheep from the previous book, presenting the image of a certain psychic integrity, to which the hero unsuccessfully tries to return. The Sheep man tells him to “dance and don’t stop,” which probably means a return to natural words and actions that are not burdened and distorted by social cliches and reflection.
Having visited the local cinema, the hero watches a film where his school friend starred as a movie star in the role of a positive character. In a bed scene in an actress playing a prostitute, the hero suddenly recognizes his Girlfriend (she was a call whore in life). He decides to return home and meet with a former friend.
A friend turns out to be a nice guy not only in the movies, but also in life. Friendship is restored. True, where is the woman - he does not know, she disappeared. A fellow actor for a long and tedious story tells how disgusted him with the world of "developed capitalism" with its vulgarity and invasion of personal life. It turns out that the idol of female hearts is deeply unhappy (and in personal life too). Further, Murakami has many episodes that are not directly related to the case. For example, the hero’s friendship with a thirteen-year-old girl, the daughter of bohemian parents with extrasensory abilities.
However, the girl was still useful. After watching the notorious film with a friend of the hero in the title role, she says: "He killed this woman!" The hero meets with the actor and puts everything to him honestly. He does not unlock and talks about his emotional tragedy. All his life he was forced to play the Role, doing what others expected from him, distorting his own nature. Nature rebelled - and here is the result.
The hero, in the full splendor of forgiveness, is ready to reconcile with a friend. But he, unable to live any longer, enters directly into the sea on his chic “maserati”. And our hero again goes to the Dolphin hotel and connects with his favorite office girl. According to Murakami, he finally found harmony with the world. “Reached individuation,” Jung would say.
