: An adult, but a naive man, in his simplicity, gets into various troubles. His attempts to help others each time end in failure.
Vasily Yegorych Knyazev is a projectionist, a weird man working in the village. The wife calls him Freak.
The freak is going to the Urals, to his brother, whom he had not seen for about twelve years, but before the trip he gets into various unpleasant stories. In the store, having bought his nephews' gifts, he notices a fifty-ruble note, picks it up and leaves it at the cash desk, assuming that the owner will return for it. Having gone outside, Crank realizes that it was he who lost his money. He does not dare to return for them, thinking that people will take him for a man who has decided to pocket someone else’s fifty dollars.
Chudik flies to the Urals in an airplane that lands not on the runway, but on a potato field. When landing, a freaky neighbor loses his false jaw. Vasily decides to help him and finds the jaw, but instead of gratitude he receives abuse: the owner of the jaw did not like the fact that the Crank took it in his hands. Giving a telegram home, Knyazev in his usual style informs his wife that he flew safely. The strict telegraph operator demands to change the text, the Crank is forced to obey.
Arriving at his brother, Vasily immediately feels the hostility of his daughter-in-law, barmaid Sofya Ivanovna. The drunk Crank, along with his brother Dmitry, are forced to move from the house to the street, where both are given to memories and philosophize.
The next day, Crank wakes up and discovers that he is alone at home. Deciding to do something pleasant for the daughter-in-law, Knyazev decides to paint the stroller. Having made drawings in the stroller, he goes to go shopping. Returning in the evening, he hears a brother swearing with his wife, who did not like the painted stroller at all. She demands that Freak leave, threatens to throw his suitcase. The freak realizes that he is not welcome, and goes home.
