: An ordinary girl finds herself in the Magic Land, where good and evil sorceresses live, where animals and even a scarecrow of straw and lumberjack made of iron speak human language.
Hurricane
In the middle of the Kansas steppe, poor farmer John lives with his wife and daughter Ally in a small wagon pulled off the wheels. Hurricanes often occur in the steppes, and the family hides from them in the cellar.
In a distant land beyond the high mountains, the evil sorceress Gingham conjures. Using a magic potion of frogs, snakes and mice, she causes a terrible hurricane to destroy the entire human race. A hurricane reaches Kansas, and Ellie's parents are hiding in the cellar. Ellie’s pet, doggie Toto runs into the van, and the girl rushes after him. Suddenly a whirlwind lifts the van into the air and blows it.
Part one. Yellow brick road
Coming out of the van, Ellie sees that he is in an unusually beautiful country. She is greeted by several men in blue clothes and Villina, an old woman in a white robe. The woman explains that Ellie got into the Magic Land, which is divided into four parts: Blue, Yellow, Purple and Pink. In each of them sorceress rule. The ruler of the Pink Country, Stella and Yellow, Villina are good, and Gingham and Bastind, the rulers of the Blue and Violet countries, are evil sorceresses.
Upon learning that Gingham had sent a devastating hurricane, Willina deprived him of strength. In her magic book, she read that the wagon is always empty in a storm, and allowed the hurricane to throw it on Gingham's head. Residents of the Blue Country Chewers, dressed in blue clothes and so named for the habit of moving their jaws, call the Ellie Fairy of the Slaying House and their liberator.
The magical land is separated from the rest of the world by the mountains of the world and the Great Desert. Villina’s magic book says that the wizard Goodwin, the powerful ruler of the Emerald City, will send Ellie home if the girl helps the three beings fulfill their most cherished desires. You need to go to Goodwin along the yellow brick paved road, but Ellie’s shoes will not endure such a difficult and long journey, and Totoshka, who can speak human language in the Magic Land, brings Ellie silver shoes from the Gingema Cave. The shoes have magical powers, but what, the Chewers don’t know.
Ellie goes to the Emerald City. On the way, she comes across a wheat field, in the center of which stands a scarecrow of straw in the form of a man, dressed in an old dress. The scarecrow calls out to Ellie, and they get to know each other. The girl takes it off the stake, and the Scarecrow, this is the name of the scarecrow, goes with her to the Emerald City to ask Goodwin for brains. His familiar crow said that if Scarecrow had brains, he would be like all people.
Travelers spend the night in the forest, and Ellie and Totoshka spend the night in a forest hut. A scarecrow who needs neither sleep nor food guards them. In the morning, continuing their journey through the forest, they hear someone moaning and find a lumberjack made of iron. It has already been a year since he rusted, and no one comes to his aid. Ellie finds an oiler in a hut and lubricates his joints. Hearing that travelers are going to the Emerald City, the Lumberjack asks to take it with him to ask Goodwin for a heart. Once he was a man and wanted to marry a pretty girl, but her aunt did not want this marriage and turned to Gingham for help. An evil sorceress enchanted his ax and the ax chopped off his leg. The blacksmith made him iron, but the girl still loved him. Then Gingham again enchanted the ax and he chopped off the lumberjack's second leg, then his arms, head and torso. The blacksmith made him iron parts of the body, the girl still loved him, but now he had no heart, and without a heart he cannot love. He returned her word to the bride, but the girl said that she loved him and would wait until he changed his mind. After falling into the rain, the Lumberjack rusted, stood for a year in the forest and now knows nothing about his beloved.
The Lumberjack turns out to be an excellent companion, a strong friendship is struck between him and the Scarecrow and an ongoing debate arises: what is better - brains or heart. Carried away, they do not notice that Ellie was in trouble: the cannibal carried the girl away. Thanks to the Scarecrow's resourcefulness, the Lumberjack kills the cannibal.
Soon, travelers meet a huge Leo who asks to take him with him to Goodwin to ask for courage, since he is a coward. With the help of Leo, travelers overcome a huge ravine, cope with scary saber-toothed tigers and cross to the other side of a stormy river.
On the road, travelers meet a poppy field. Ellie and Totoshka fell asleep, the Scarecrow and the Lumberjack are carried through him in his arms, but Leo does not have time to run across and falls asleep at the very edge of the field. The Lumberjack rescues the queen of mice from a cat. Having collected his subjects, the queen takes out Leo from the field. She gives Ally a silver whistle so that the girl can always call her.
Part two. Emerald City
Travelers come to the Emerald City, where all residents wear green clothing. The farmer, whom they stop for the night, says that no one has ever seen Goodwin's face, since he takes on different guises.
The emerald city is surrounded by a high stone wall. The gatekeeper puts on everyone green glasses so that they are not blinded by the splendor of the city. Even its inhabitants wear glasses day and night.
After crossing the moat, travelers enter the palace. The great wizard Goodwin, taking various images, talks to travelers one at a time. Upon learning of the death of Gingema, Goodwin sets a condition: he will help to fulfill what he is asked for, but for this you need to destroy the evil sorceress Bastinda, the lord of the Purple Country.
Since there is no other way, friends go to the Violet country, which is inhabited by the Miguns, known as skilled craftsmen, who love to wear purple clothes and blink all the time. When they enter the territory of the Violet Country, Bastinda calls for help from huge evil wolves, a raven with iron beaks, poisonous bees, but friends win. Then Bastinda decides to use the last resort: with the help of the Golden Hat, she calls a flock of Flying Monkeys. Gutting the Scarecrow, dropping the Lumberjack into the gorge and putting him in the Lion's cage, the Flying Monkeys are afraid to touch Ellie because of her silver shoes. Having decided that she is a fairy, the leader carefully delivers the girl to Bastinda's palace.
Bastinda sends the girl to work in the kitchen. Thanks to this, Ellie can feed Leo and Toto. Ellie notices that Bastinda is afraid of water. An evil sorceress dreams of capturing silver shoes, and one day she manages to get one. With anger, Ellie pours a bucket of water on Bastinda, and the evil sorceress melts like sugar in tea.
Liberated Miguns restore the Lumberjack and the Scarecrow. They offer the Lumberjack to become their ruler. The flattered Lumberjack promises to get a heart from Goodwin and return. Happy Miguns call Ellie Fairy of Saving Water and promise from now on to wash three times a day.
Leaving the Purple Country, Ellie takes with him a Golden Hat. As the owner of the Golden Hat, Ellie calls the Flying Monkeys, and they transfer friends to the Emerald City. On the way, the leader tells the girl their story. Once the tribe of Flying Monkeys angered a powerful fairy, and she created a Golden Hat in punishment. Now the Flying Monkeys must fulfill the three wishes of the owner of the Golden Hat. The hat passed from hand to hand until it came to Bastinda, and now to Ellie.
Goodwin does not accept travelers for a long time, and then the Scarecrow threatens to call the Flying Monkeys. The threat is in effect, and the next day Goodwin calls his friends into a hall where no one is there, but the wizard is invisibly present. It takes a long time for evidence of the destruction of Bastinda, when suddenly Totoshka runs behind a small screen in the farthest corner of the hall, and from there a man runs out with a cry. Goodwin is a great deceiver. He himself is from Kansas. In his youth, Goodwin worked as an actor, then rose on a gas cylinder. Once his balloon was blown away by the wind, and Goodwin entered the Wizardland, where the inhabitants mistook him for a wizard. Having built the Emerald City, he closed in the palace, ordering all residents to wear green glasses so that no one would guess that there is no more green in the Emerald City than in any other. For Goodwin, the glory of the great wizard strengthened, and he took a campaign against Bastinda, in which he was defeated by the Flying Monkeys. Upon learning that Ellie's van crushed Gingham, Goodwin decided to send the girl to destroy Bastinda, counting on the power of magic shoes.
Part three. Fulfillment of desires
Although Goodwin turns out to be a liar, he gives Scarecrow the brains - a bag of bran with needles, a Tin Woodman a silk heart, and Leo some kind of drink. True, he believes that they already possess all these qualities.
To return Ellie home, Goodwin takes out his balloon and decides to fly on it to Kansas with the girl. On the appointed day, Goodwin gathers the people and announces that he is flying away, and instead leaves him as ruler to the Scarecrow of the Wise. While Ellie gently says goodbye to friends, a whirlwind flies up and a balloon with Goodwin flies away without a girl.
Friends decide to turn to the good sorceress Stella. She will help the girl return to Kansas.
On the way, travelers find themselves in a forest, where many animals gathered in a wide meadow. Seeing Leo, they bow to him and ask to be freed from the huge spider that came into the forest and sucks blood from its inhabitants. The brave lion destroys the spider, and the animals ask him to become their king. Leo agrees, but only after Ellie helps.
The sorceress Stella welcomes travelers. She takes the Golden Hat from Ellie and gives it to the Flying Monkeys so that they are free. Stella reveals to the girl the secret of silver shoes: they transfer the owner wherever he wants, just hit the heel on the heel and name the place where you want to find yourself.
Ellie returns to Kansas to her parents, who considered her dead. Silver shoes are lost along the road.
Epilogue
John built a new house on the site of the old van. For several days, Ellie tells her happy parents about her adventures in the Wizarding Land, and Totoshka confirms her story by wagging her tail. Soon, her father takes Ally to a nearby town to a fair, the girl meets Goodwin there, and there is no end to mutual joy.
